The 2013 MASTER ARTISTS & WORKSHOPS:

Daniel Long
RhythmMusic – An Interactive Art and Rhythm program

The Rhythm Music workshop is an interactive event for students and teachers alike. Participants will gain basic music skills while learning a variation on the traditional West African rhythm of Buse´. They will develop an appreciation for the origins of rhythmic music, percussion instruments and the cultural significance of both. Through the implementation of non-verbal cues and the connection of syllables and language to rhythm, guest artist and facilitator Daniel Long will help your group to communicate musically using a wide array of drums and other percussion instruments. Your entire group will be amazed as they create spontaneous music together to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham! Q and A to follow as time allows.

Rachel Hall
Magic a Magic City

The idea I have for my table this year was inspired by Kara Walker. Her most popular works involve black paper cut into silhouettes of people with minimal background. She deals with themes of race, gender, and identity. So, for this year’s Imagination Festival I want to show the children how to make a silhouetted Magic City. I could use the cardboard circles as the backgrounds by spray painting them a light color, like yellow or blue, and then have the children cut shapes of buildings, cars, people, fire hydrants, etc. out of dark construction paper. On Friday when we have the children coming in classes, each group can make their own silhouetted Magic City and then take it back to school and, perhaps, display it in their classrooms. Then, on Saturday and Sunday the children can contribute to a few city scenes and make silhouetted Magic Cities as a community. Making these cities will hopefully emphasize the 30th anniversary of Magic City.

Hannah Adamson
Relief Printing

Albrecht Durer is an artist well known for his intricate woodcuts and copper engravings. In reference to his work in printmaking, students will imitate the engraving process using pencils and styrofoam plates. Using a dull pencil, students will be able to draw an image into the back of the plate, which will then be rolled up in ink and printed on paper as a relief print.

Charles Tortoricci
Species Poet Tree Garden

Fluxus (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) Referencing the installations and happenings of the Fluxus movement of the 1960s, the resulting Visual Poetry movement of the 1980s, and the nature writings of the 19th century Transcendentalists, this workshop celebrates these text-based art and literary movements by allowing participants to create word-art mobiles and install them under the shade of Linn Park trees. The installation becomes both visual and interactive as breezes dance the mobiles, sending the text images into flowing twists and turns. The participants of this workshop will compose cut-up words and phrases into poems, images, and sayings, using pre-cut paper shapes as a canvas. They will work with a variety of media to decorate their word art and then hang them as mobiles under the spread of the trees, creating the Species’ Poet Tree Gardens.

Bob Carr
Henri Matisse- “Cut Paper Collage Cards”

In this workshop, we will be inspired by the artist, Henri Matisse. When poor health stopped him from painting, he developed the idea of using cut paper in place of paint. Using scissors as a pencil, we will cut directly into the paper creating large naturalistic shapes. We will learn to cut and arrange paper to make cards. We will also learn to cut a variety of shapes for our cards, such as spirals, zig zags and curves.

Brodie Whetstone
Soul Shake Stand

In honor of 50 years of civil rights and 30 years of MCAC in Birmingham, we will be serving up soul for a painting activity! Students will first create their own signature color “soul shake” by mixing tempura paint or ink colors. We will discuss color theory, how color evokes feeling, emotion, or imagery, and how to mix colors. Students might want to create a color that reflects how they feel that day, or create a favorite color, or the color of their personality. They might enjoy naming their individual soul shake color. Then, each student will use their paint color to contribute a handprint or portray an expressive design on a big mural.

Jillian Woodruff
I am A Blockhead

Students will learn about various artists and their use of found objects to make art. They will then
receive a wooden block and create their own “blockhead” sculpture, taking inspiration from the artists’ varying visual styles and concentrating on the features they see in their wood block.

Kara Hall
The Size of the Installation

Students will learn how to make an installation by using a small box or other object and creating a scene inside using various found objects. Students will discuss the concept of size by comparing different objects to their box and how the sizes change how everything is seen.

Willow Scott
Project Title: bLOCk: 4 Musicians Remembered and Recreated

In this workshop students will learn about four musicians. Students will use pre-made printing blocks to make their own prints in the style of Andy Warhol, an artist who rose to fame in the sixties. Students will listen and interact with the music and lyrics while creating their prints.

Qwendolyn Griffin
Quilts and the Underground Railroad: The Art of Communication, a Pattern of Escape

Art has always been a means of communication, but the necessity of art for survival was quite literal in the time of slavery in America and the underground railroad. We will discuss the meanings of various quilt patterns and how these patterns helped slaves trace a route to freedom. Workshop participants will then re-create quilt patterns using scraps of fabric and construction paper.

Peyton Guthrie and ABby Leach
Pinch Pot Creatures: Clay Sculpture

This workshop will explore the basic hand-building techniques for clay vessels and sculptures. The participants will create a small cup using the pinch-post technique. They will then “characterize” their cup by adding sculptural elements such as nose or arms to the pot or by cutting away clay to create a mouth or eyes.

Jordan Tyler Smith
“Our Neighborhood”

My project centers around the idea of community, specifically on a neighborhood scale. I want to create a terrain for the participants to install paper houses on after they have decorated them with their own designs to make a colorful, rolling landscape of small paper houses. The end result is a large group installation composed of individual works of art, in the same way that a neighborhood is a shared space filled with diverse cultures, races, individuals etc..

Carrie Montgomery
If Bees Could Decorate

The beehive is a commonly used symbol dating at least to Roman times which represents industry and co-operation. Take part in creating a community hive of our own while working with extraordinary objects of color, light and sound. In this workshop you will learn to work with ordinary objects such as glass, drift wood, found objects and wire to transform them into a bustling hive of collaboration.

LaQuin Taylor
Designing Around the Bend

In this workshop participants will explore quilting design through a minimalist approach. We’ll offer
some challenging constraints in constructing patterns in an attempt to mimic the organic quilting design
process of the talented ladies of Wilcox, Alabama’s, Gee’s Bend.

Freida Hall
Designing a Cartouche

A cartouche is an oval or oblong document containing an important person’s name. One of the earliest pictographic languages that was used by the ancient Egyptians some 3000 years ago. This language was a type of hieroglyphic or form of picture writing. Adinkra symbols are from Ghana, Africa these symbols represent positive characteristics Africans from this country are trying to obtain or already reflect theses qualities. Since African-Americans come from the Diaspora of Africa it is only fitting that more than one culture is included in the cartouche.

LaQuita Middleton Holmes
Colored H2O and Songs of the Movement

A theatrical, poetic and musical presentation of civil rights history. Featuring and excerpt from LaQuita Holmes’ play “Colored H2O”.

Zachary Gallman
Tiny Lines = Big Art

Learn how to collaborate with your surroundings, in the same manner as artist Shantell Martin. You’ll translate what you experience into small scale glyphs, lines and characters. These drawings will spill from one dimension into part of a large scale artwork, and continue to grow throughout the weekend.

Alley Bulka
GUERRILLA GIRLS: Fighting discrimination with facts, humor and fake fur

Children will make collages from really empowering photos of women (and men) who came from such diversity and hard times, who came out and above these hard times by adopting an attitude of kindness, sense of self, empowerment, integrity, etc. Participants will pick images that somehow inspire them from these photos and glue them onto cardboard and then across these pieces write in marker some positive, powerful words. We will turn these works of art into a fan by adding a painting stirring stick.
Become a fan of positive thinking!

Becca Munkachy
Painting with Emotion: Abstract Expressionism- Helen Frankenthaler

As an Abstract Expressionist in the 1950′s, Helen Frankenthaler worked next to great artists such as Gorky, Pollack, and de Kooning. She expressed herself personally through the fluidity and movement of paint on canvas. Students will have the chance to get messy during this workshop in order to express themselves abstractly through the use of paints on paper. No need to worry about staying in the lines.

More than 78 million families visit water parks every year. Hitting a water park with kids can be enough to make a mom panic.

SafetyTat is a temporary tattoo that helps to keep children connected to their parents. The tattoo reads “If Lost, Please Call” and lists a mobile phone number. They are super easy to apply and perfect for water parks, theme parks or other crowded surroundings. SafetyTat also offers waterless ‘Quick Stick’ tattoo, allowing immediate, on-the-go safety.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children advises children carry some form of identification and family/emergency contact on them while visiting an amusement or water park. But bathing suits and water play can preclude children from following this safety tip. Now, SafetyTat is empowering children and parents with peace of mind.

When a friend told me to check out Printicular, an app that allows you to send pictures to be printed at a local Walgreens, I was hesitant. I have played with apps like this before – sending in pictures only to arrive at the store’s location and discover the app did not work.

But let me tell you, Printicular was a pleasant surprise.

In less than 10 clicks, my photos were ready to send. I immediately received an email from Walgreens saying they received the order, and an hour later, I received another email saying the pictures were ready to pick up.

In a world where my iPhone acts as my primary camera, this app works for me.

The app allows you to access the pictures in your camera roll, photo stream and photo library (which if you are like me, contain the same pictures), and Walgreens lets you print 4×6, 5×7 and 8×10 pictures.

But it is the app’s ability to create 4×4 prints from Instagram that makes it unique.

I did not have to edit the format or pull out a straight cutter. When I selected pictures from my account, the 4×4 size was the default.

This can be a game changer for those who love to scrapbook or create stationary.

The app can access pictures from your Facebook and Flickr accounts too.

Cost-wise, Walgreens provides competitive prices:

4×6 – 29 cents
4×4 – 39 cents
5×7 – $1.99
8×10 – $3.99

And for a limited time, you can take 25 percent off your order if you use the promotional code “PARTNER25″ at checkout. You pay for the prints when you pick them up at the store.

If you are like me, I capture more moments on my phone because I always have it with me. And let’s face it, my iPhone camera has better quality than my actual camera. Printicular makes printing photos from your phone quick and easy, and Walgreens makes the prints available in an hour, notifying you when they are ready.

Along with the iPhone, the app is available on the iPad, iPod Touch and Android phones.

Monsters, letters, learning, oh my. Endless Alphabet, a new app for your iPad and iPhone by Callaway Digital Arts will engage your child through colorful graphics and interactive content.

Moms, you should not hesitate to download this app. It’s fun. It’s simple. And it’s free.

The first thing you will notice about this app is its ease of use. From the moment you open it, the display goes straight to the game. You do not have to deal with a home page or a table of contents, meaning your child can open the app and immediately play.

Once the game is in motion, your child will quickly become captivated by the colors and the graphics. The game’s characters, a misfit bunch of curious monsters, come in every shape and size.

The creators of the app are also the people behind the Sesame Street book, Monster at the End of this Book, and it shows that they are familiar with the friendly-monster-types.

The object of the app is simple.

A bright blue monster greets your child on the main screen. Upon choosing a word in his month, a group of these friendly monsters run across the display, scattering the letters across the screen.

It is your child’s job to match the letters to the spots where they belong. When one is selected, the letter comes to life, revealing its monster identity and the sound the letter makes.

As a parent, you will notice that the collection of words is quite advance for a preschooler. The app includes words like exercise, musician and quarrel, to name a few. But I do not see the words as a test of cognitive skill, but instead a medium for your child to interact with letters.

It becomes evident that creating this interaction with letters is the app’s main goal.

Spelling is not tested because the letters can be placed out of order, nor is your child’s ability to retain the definitions of the words. All of this information is available, providing plenty of opportunities to learn, but it is not tested to move on further in the game.

Every word and letter is read out loud by the narrator, and once a word is completed, a short animation explains the word’s definition in an engaging way. Who knows, after a while you might notice your child using words like, “gargantuan: something that is really, really, really big.”

Overall, the app provides a pressure-free atmosphere for learning. You child will not be competing with anyone, and a timer is not set. The focus is on the letters, their shapes and their sounds.

Endless Alphabet is an app worth investing in, and lucky for you, the investment is free. With new words added on a regular basis, the app truly provides endless learning opportunities.
